Jeri F. Walton Service Award

Nomination Deadline: October 19th each year Open To: Oncology Section Member PT/PTA

PURPOSE

The Jeri F. Walton Service Award was established by the Oncology Section of the APTA to recognize those persons whose work, has resulted in lasting and significant advances in the science, education, and practice of the profession of physical therapy in oncology.

ELIGIBILITY

The Jeri F. Walton PT Service Award shall be presented to a member who has:

  1. Been a member of the Oncology Section for a minimum of two years.
  2. Made notable contributions to the profession of physical therapy in oncology.
  3. Been nominated by a Section member or APTA component.
  4. Been elected by the Board of Directors of the Oncology Section.

CRITERIA

Nominees shall demonstrate the following:

  1. Leadership in advancing the science, education, or practice of physical therapy in oncology
  2. Achievements in at least two of the three areas of the profession (research, education, or clinical practice).
  3. Contributions to the profession which are sufficient to demonstrate frequent and sustained efforts to advance the profession.

PROCEDURES

  1. The nomination of any active members of the Oncology Section for the Jeri F. Walton Service Award may be submitted electronically to the Oncology Section Office at any time, but not later than October 1 for consideration at the upcoming Combined Sections Meeting. No person shall nominate themselves.
  2. The documentation to support the nomination, should include: a recent curriculum vitae of the nominee; letter(s) of support that address the qualifications of the nominee; and other written evidence of the nominee's leadership, influence, and achievements. The burden of furnishing the written documentation shall rest solely with the Section member or component submitting the nomination. The nominating member or component should provide sufficient documentation to demonstrate that he nominee meets the criteria. All documents, letters of support, etc. should be submitted together.
  3. The elected/chosen recipients will be notified in December of the award to be given, and award presentations will be at the annual Celebration of Life Reception at CSM in February.

Oncology Physical Therapy Award

Oncology Section Research Award

Nomination Deadline: October 19th each year Open To: Oncology Section Member PT/PTA

PURPOSE:

The Research Award was established by the Oncology Section of the APTA to recognize those persons whose work has resulted in enduring and outstanding research pertaining to Oncologic physical therapy. This work should have been presented at APTA's Combined Sections Meeting or Annual Conference, or published in areas appropriate to the profession of physical therapy in the field of oncology.

ELIGIBILITY

The Research Award shall be presented to a member who has:

  1. Been a member of the American Physical Therapy Association for a minimum of three years, and the Oncology Section for one year.
  2. Made a notable contribution to research in the profession of physical therapy in oncology and/or HIV physical therapy practice.
  3. Been nominated by an Oncology Section member or APTA component. No member shall nominate himself/herself.
  4. Been elected by the Board of Directors of the Oncology Section.

CRITERIA

  1. The individual's research material must provide a meaningful contribution to the scientific basis of the physical therapy profession in the field of oncology.
  2. The oral presentations and written publication of research material by the individual have been reported to appropriate audiences.

PROCEDURES

  1. The nomination of any member of the Oncology Section for the Research Award must be submitted electronically to the Oncology Section Office at any time, but not later than October 1, for consideration at the upcoming Combined Sections Meeting. . Nominations may be submitted from an Oncology Section member or APTA component, except that no member shall nominate himself/herself. All documentation should be submitted together.
  2. The application should include: copies of publications, a recent curriculum vitae of the nominee, and letters of support that address the qualifications of the nominee.
  3. The recipients will be notified in December of the award to be given, and award presentations will be at the annual Business Meeting at CSM in February.

Oncology Physical Therapy Award

Student Research Award

Nomination Deadline: October 19th each year Open To: Oncology Section Member PT/PTA

PURPOSE

The Student Research Award is established by the Oncology Section of the APTA to recognize those students who have performed outstanding basic, clinical, or educational student research pertaining to the practice of physical therapy in oncology and/or HIV, and whose research is presented either orally or by poster at CSM.

ELIGIBILITY

The Student Research Award shall be presented to a student who meets all of the following:

  1. Must be a member of the Oncology Section. Research must have been conducted while applicant was a student.
  2. Made a contribution as a student to research in oncology and/or HIV physical therapy practice.
  3. Is able to present the research either by platform or poster at CSM. If necessary, research can be presented at Annual Conference. Students should submit an abstract for consideration at CSM through APTA's abstract application process (see the call for abstracts at www.apta.org), and should also submit an application to the Oncology Section for the Student Research Award. See procedures below for more information.
  4. Elected by the Board of Directors of the Oncology Section.

CRITERIA

  1. The student's research material provides a meaningful contribution to the scientific basis of the physical therapy profession in the field of oncology and/or HIV Disease.
  2. The research must have been completed while a student. The presentation of the research may be given while a student or within the first two years after graduation.

AWARD PRIVILEGES

Paid early-bird student registration to the CSM at which the presentation of the research is given. If the research is the work of a team, student registration shall be paid for all team members who attend.

PROCEDURES

  1. The nomination of any member of the Oncology Section for the Student Research Award of the Oncology Section of the APTA must be submitted electronically to the Oncology Section Office at any time, but not later than APTA's deadline for abstract submission (*note- the deadline will be October 1) for consideration for presentation at the following Combined Sections Meeting. The abstract must also be submitted to APTA's general "Call for Abstracts" for presentation at CSM. Nominations will be considered separately for acceptance at CSM and the Student Research Award. If a nominee is chosen for the Student Research Award but is not selected to present through APTA's selection process, they will give a special student presentation at CSM.
  2. The nomination must include: an abstract of the research, a recent curriculum vitae of the nominee; and letters of support that address the qualifications of the nominee and the significance of the research. The awards committee may request a full copy of the research during the selection process.
  3. The elected/chosen recipients will be notified by December of the award to be given, and award presentations will be at the annual Business Meeting at CSM in February.

Oncology Physical Therapy Award

Debbra Flomenhoft Humanitarian Award

Nomination Deadline: October 19th each year Open To: Oncology Section Member PT/PTA

PURPOSE

The Debbra Flomenhoft Humanitarian Award is established by the Oncology Section of the APTA to recognize those persons whose work:

  1. Has resulted in the advancement of the practice of compassionate oncology rehabilitation
  2. Heightened the understanding of cancer illness, and psychosocial rehabilitation issues
  3. Demonstrates patient advocacy.

ELIGIBILITY

The Debbra Flomenhoft Humanitarian Award shall be presented to an individual who has

  1. Made a notable contribution to oncology physical therapy and rehabilitation, combining patient advocacy, clinical excellence, and compassionate service.
  2. May or may not be a physical therapist.
  3. Been elected by the Oncology Section Board of Directors.

CRITERIA

  1. Demonstrated recognizable contributions in advancing the compassionate component of rehabilitation in oncology, and demonstrated personal influence in advancing concepts of the psychosocial needs of the patient with cancer, and the role of the physical therapist in caring for such patients.
  2. Documented achievements in at least two of the areas of influence (publications, services, programs), which have influenced these respective areas in durable ways.
  3. Contributions to the profession through leadership, influence, service, or achievements which are sufficient to demonstrate frequent and sustained efforts to advance the profession over a period of at least one year preceding nomination for the award.

PROCEDURES

  1. The nomination of any person for the Debbra Flomenhoft Humanitarian Award must be submitted electronically to the Oncology Section Office at any time, but not later than October 1 for consideration for presentation at the upcoming Combined Sections Meeting. Nominations are in order from an Oncology Section member or APTA component, except that no member shall nominate himself/herself.
  2. The nomination must include: a recent curriculum vitae of the nominee; letters of support that address the qualifications of the nominee; and any other written evidence of the nominee's leadership, influence, and achievements.
  3. The elected/chosen recipients will be notified in December of the award to be given, and award presentations will be at the annual Business Meeting at CSM in February.

Oncology Physical Therapy Award

Steve Gudas Award For Outstanding Publication in Rehabilitation Oncology

Nomination Deadline: October 19th each year Open To: Oncology Section Member PT/PTA

PURPOSE

The award is established by the Oncology section to recognize those persons whose written publication in the Section's Journal, Rehabilitation Oncology, has resulted in advancement of the practice of oncology physical therapy.

ELIGIBILITY

  1. Article has been published in Rehabilitation Oncology within the past calendar year.
  2. Article has been chosen by the Editorial Board of the Section and elected by the Oncology Board of Directors.

CRITERIA

To an individual whose publication:

  1. Has contributed to the understanding of the disease and/or the medical treatment of the disease, OR
  2. Has contributed to evidence-based practice in Oncology or HIV Disease rehabilitation.

PROCEDURE

  1. After the last journal of the calendar year is published, the Editorial Board of Rehabilitation Oncology will review all articles published that year, and select one article for the Steve Gudas Award.
  2. The elected/chosen recipients will be notified in December of the award to be given, and award presentations will be at the annual Business Meeting at CSM in February.
