Meet-A-Member: July 2016

Steve Wechsler, PT, DPT, NCS

Early in my career as a physical therapist, I have found my passion in the realms of neurologic and oncologic rehabilitation. I embrace the challenges and the dynamic work inherently associated with each day as a physical therapist, delivering the highest possible care to my clients. I am constantly seeking knowledge and mentorship to further my skill set, and I value the power of education, as I plan to eventually enter into academia.

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science, Clinical Health Sciences, Ithaca College, 2010
  • Doctorate of Physical Therapy, Ithaca College, 2012

Professional:

Steve is a recognized Neurologic Certified Specialist through the APTA and currently works full-time as a Senior Physical Therapist at Memorial Sloan Kettering's outpatient Sillerman Center for Rehabilitation.

Prior to working in outpatient oncology rehab, Steve worked at Mount Sinai Hospital where he gained experience in inpatient acute rehab, working with patients following CVA, TBI, and SCI. It was during this time that Steve discovered his passion working with patients with neurological impairments. Steve continues to volunteer with an outdoor adventure group working with patients following SCI to develop higher-level skills and to facilitate a return to an active lifestyle.

In his current position at Memorial Sloan Kettering, Steve has, again, found a population that he is challenged by, compassionate for, and enjoys working with.

Affiliations:

Steve is a member of the Oncology Section of the APTA and currently serves as the Social Media Chair for the section. Steve manages the section's social media platforms, promoting evidence-based practice and advocating for patients and clinicians of oncology rehabilitation.

Quote:

"To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift."
- Steve Prefontaine

Personal:

Steve grew up a Yankees fan behind enemy lines just outside of Boston, Massachusetts. He now lives in New York City where he is able to wear his hat much more comfortably. Steve has two marathons under his belt – New York City and Chicago – and is aiming for a third: Boston, he's coming home! When he's not running, Steve enjoys skateboarding, spending time with family and friends, eating good food, drinking too much coffee, and travelling in and out of the country.
